Barbie Girl is missing
Aqua's first two singles Cartoon Heroes and Around The World didn't do as well as they had expected. Only 3 mio. sold copies of Aquarius and 1 mio. singles until now. However, Aqua are now trying to change that with a new Barbie Girl in the shape of Bumble Bees. The third single Bumble Bees is going to help Aqua selling more albums to children, because it's a more cartoonish and happy song compared to the two first singles.
Lene is not going on world tour
- Aqua's world tour was supposed to begin August this year, now it has been postponed to January 2001.
- The record compagny has decided that Lene and Rene are going to continue their promotion tour.
- The two other members, Claus and Sren, have already started working on the third Aqua album. A one year break, like on their first album, is too dangerous.
Aqua are still doing well in Scandinavia and the Far East, but USA, England and Germany have lost interest in Aquarius. Aquarium was a mega hit in the late 90's, and sold 15 mio. copies. Aquarius has only sold 3 mio. copies world-wide.
Facts on Aquarius
- Aquarius only reached a 78. spot in USA and went straight out of Billboard after only two weeks. The first album sold 2,7 mio. copies on this market.
- Aquarius was also in England out of the album chart after only two weeks and 35000 sold copies.
- Around The World went down to a 44. spot this week in England. In 1997/98 Aqua had 3 English number one hits in a row.
- Aqua were out of the spotlight for one year before the new album was released. That is too long in a world where teenagers change their taste in music every third month, says Niclas Anker to Norwegian Dagbladet.
Adrian Perrott (Universal Norway) points out, when Aqua had their break through in '97 with Barbie Girl they were seen as a humour band. The new album is more serious, and is therefore not doing that well.
- Further more have many bands copied them since '97, and that has probably also had a bad effect.
